Kilian - Perfume as an Art
With the Valentine's Day slowly approaching, let me start with a journey and take you to Cognac. Heir to a long line of cognac-makers who were pioneers in luxury, Kilian decided to take up the torch of family tradition and created a new luxury brand, however not in drinks, but luxury perfume. Many of Kilian's fragrances today carry his childhood memories as they reminiscent of the sugar in the alcohol and he wood of the cognac barrels.
You will find a gorgeous Kilian perfume boutique in the middle of Burlington Arcade in London. Cosy little store with a staircase leading up to an amazing private room for those who would like to exprience Kilian perfumery to the fullest.
I went upstairs and was greeted but lovely Angelo with a glass of sparkling water (usually its champagne for those who are not pregnant!) , and sat me down in from of the whole Kilian perfume collection.
I was looking for a smell that is quite unusual, rare and unforgettable. I am a fan of oudy smells, so we went through 'The Smokes' family perfumes fist. What I really liked about the process is how Angelo was able to take you on a journey with each fragrance, describing it as a location, or a feeling or bringing up a memory. He would spray each Kilian paper and hand it to me with both hands, which made it feel very felt special and attentive. Each bottle comes packaged in beautiful hand-crafted box. Some can be used a clutch bag for going out! They are that gorgeous!
Some of the most popular and famous Kilian fragrances are:
Straight to Heaven - Moments of ecstasy envelop the senses with Straight to Heaven, white cristal. Smoldering with addictive sensuality, a burning splash of rich dark rum defines the opening, its sweet gourmand chord is softened by creamy vanilla and dried fruit. Spicy patchouli pairs with the fresh, woodsy scent of cedarwood to finish, finding animalic harmony at long last. Woodsy Animalic Harmony
Good Girl Gone Bad - The uninhibited Good girl gone Bad finds herself in a luscious floral whirlwind in the garden of good and evil. Half-innocent, half-voluptuous, the apricot-tinged osmanthus absolute, orange blossom and rose of May absolute that open the fragrance are beholden by the ultimate temptress: an explosion of the three-sirens of flowers: tuberose absolute, jasmine and narcissus. Fruity Floral Harmony
Intoxicated - Inexplicably addictive, Intoxicated curbs craving like a cup of rich Turkish coffee, laced with green cardamom–both in oil and absolute–doubling the addictive stronghold of this stimulating substance. Warmth rises like stream with a spicy cinnamon and hallucinogenic nutmeg. At its base, like at the bottom of a delicate porcelain mug, floats the crystallized sweetness of caramelized sugar. Gourmand Coffee Harmony
Moonlight in Heaven - A dazzling beam of pearlized light dances on the oceans belly, witnessed by two lovers who watch from a balcony draped in floating white opaque gauze that seems alive, responding to a warm wind that blows. The lovers, high above the world to almost touch the stars, with full hearts and bodies light as air. Omnipresent, Moonlight in Heaven sparkles with a citrus-forward opening, driven by a duo of lemon and grapefruit, spiced with pink pepper berry. Coconut milk and rice–white as the moon’s face–rounds out creamy mango and powdery jasmine sambac, while a tonka bean drydown envelops delicate vetiver. Gourmand Fruity Harmony
As we were going through each and every perfume, we saved the ones I loved in the middle of the table. We kept our top 5 at all times. I came into the store with my favourite Straight to Heaven which took its place in the Top5 straight away. But then I found Straight to Heaven Extreme - which was more intense variation of my old favourite, Liaisons Dangereuses, typical me - with floral and fruity harmony, Rose Oud - femiine interpretation of oud and floral harmony and Sacred Wood - sensual, inviting and fixative scent.
After smelling them all through one by one again, I chose my new fragrance Sacred Wood - Sensuous, warm, inviting, Sacred Wood, with mythical mysore sandalwood–strong and fixative, used in ritualistic practice in India for thousands of years–wraps us in a steam of spiced milk, peppered with cumin and carrot essence. Cedar wood and incense essence evoke the spirit of wood burned and smoked for hours, leaving a scent that deeply lingers on hair and skin for days after. Woodsy Harmony.
I loved the experience, learning more about the brand, its history, each collection and each fragrance. Angelo was extremely helpful and patient with me. I am so happy I booked the consultation and found my new smell to add to my growing Kilian collection.
If you haven't heard of Kilian yet, or have, but seen only the top sellers in store, I do recommend visiting Burlington Arcade Kilian. The variation of unique smells will blow your mind.
And here I am, over the moon with my new purchase! See you soon Kilian! That wasn't the last time we see each other!
